Hello, I'm Judy and I'm an author of children's fantasy books. ...
It’s about books and more.
Judy grew up in Shepshed, Leicestershire (UK). She studied at the Guildhall School of Music, London. After graduating, she worked as a professional violist and teacher.
Prior to being an author, I was a professional musician and teacher, with the viola as my first study. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music, London, I taught and freelanced with various orchestras in Cambridge, where I lived, and London. In London, I played mostly with the London Mozart Players and the City of London Sinfonia, and so, had the chance to rub shoulders with some amazing famous musicians.
I lived in Cyprus for six years between 1989 and 1995, where I taught at the Limassol Municipal Music School, and in Nicosia, with the Music and Fine Arts Fund string teaching project, headed up by Mrs Vassiliou, the then president’s wife. I also had a violin, viola, and piano trio, performing regularly as well as recording for radio and Cyprus TV.
It was in Cyprus that I had my first vulture encounter: one of those unexpected wow moments in life. As I was driving along the Limassol to Paphos coast road, a massive bird launched itself from the top of a craggy limestone cliff and soared out of the sparkling azure Mediterranean. Who wouldn’t be impressed by such a sight? And that was it! The start of the Vulture Island Adventure series (illustrated by Foxhat) combines the adventures of a young boy, his friendship with a Griffon Vulture and the magical history of the island of Cyprus.
Apart from vultures, my training in Early Years music and my twin grandchildren have inspired me to write other stories too. The heroes include dinosaurs, cats, and crocodiles, amongst others. My first published book in 2017 was A Year in the Life of Brack, illustrated by Anna Landmane. It is a story about a whacky Brachiosaurus Dinosaur who makes his home with a family in a quiet village. The village doesn’t stay quiet for long!
So, where am I now? Geographically, in Warwickshire with my husband Alex. Career-wise, I’ve recently completed a proofreading and copy-editing course with distinction. So now, I’m not only writing adventure stories but also immersed in editing novels and poetry of various genres. It’s a busy but fulfilling time.
